ABOUT OUR COUNTY

Tuesday, December 16, 2008
As you can see we have a tremendous wealth of talent in our squads. P&K are in a fantastic position in that we had 20 girls with a handicap of 6 or less hoping for a place, but unfortunatley the places are limited and as you can imagine it is a major headache for the selectors. and one which It was a very difficult decision to select the sdqua and a great bunch of girls who are all out to do the very best they can for P&K.
Our coaching sessions will take place over the winter and Shona Leighton our match secretary is in the process of arranging practice matches against other counties and perhaps against Scratch League teams! So if you have a Gents of Ladies Scratch Team who would like to offer a practice match with the girls please contact Shona or myself and we would be delighted to arrange a date!
We have had one coaching session at Gleneagles already on what was a rather cold day, however the girls concentrated on the long game and coaches Andrew and John gave the girls a talk on the psychological side of the game.
Below are a few photos of the girls in action!
Our winter coaching has started in earnest for our Juniors, with our Elite Squad going along to Gleneagles on Sunday and enjoying some short game coaching and some tips on how to prepare themselves for play both in terms of your game and your metal attitude. Very interesting!
The Elite squads for this year are:
Group 1. Emily Aird (Strathmore), Megan Aird (Strathmore), Ailie Burnett (Dunkeld), Erin Millar (Pitlochry), Nicola robertson (Dunblane) and Eilidh Watson (Muckhart)
Group 2. Laura Aitken (Killin), Caitlin Bartrop (Whitemoss), Claire Gadsby (Muthill), Hannah Robb (Strathmore), Kathry Robertson (Auchterarder), Siobhan Teague (Auchterarder)
A huge thank you also go to Senior Squad girls Emily Ogilvy and Laura Walker who came along on Sunday to offer support and encouragement to all our girls. They were great.
I will post photos of the juniors soon, I completely forgot on Sunday!!

Carly was selected to play in the GB&I Curtis Cup Team and was the youngest ever member of the Team. She qualified to the final stages of the British Womens Open Amateur Golf Championship at North Berwick. Carly won the Scottish Girls (Close) Amateur Championship at Alyth. She was selected to represent Scotland at the Girls Home Internationals at Panmure Barry and she played her way into the final stages of the British Open Strokeplay championships at Malone golf Club in Ireland. Along with fellow Scottish team mate Kelsey Macdonald she won the girls team trophy at Belgian Junior International Tournament. Carly was also once again chosen to represent the European Team in the Junior Ryder Cup in America this year.
Alexandra Bushby:
Alex made the cut in the Helen Holm Scottish Women's open amateur stroke-play championship. She broke the Lansdowne Course record which had stood at 74 since 1997 by returning a fantastic 71. Alex won the North of Scotland Championship at Strathmore and qualified into the matchplay stages of the English Mid Amateur Championship and made it through to the semi final stages. Alex also won the Perth and Kinross County Champion of Champions at Gleneagles in September but the highlight of Alex’s year must have been earlier this month when she took part in the SLGA Champion of Champions at Glasgow Gailes. Following a 76 over the par 75 course she was then involved in a sudden death play off with fellow team mate Carly Booth. Alex birdied the first extra hole to lift the trophy.
Annabel Niven:
Annabel was chosen to represent Scotland a the Under 16 Open Stroke Championship at Craigielaw and was top Scot finishing 12th. She was nominated by the SLGA to play in the R&A Junior Open golf championship at Hesketh and won the Nordic & Central European Trophy for the best nett score of both boys and girls. She was also selected to represent Scotland in the Girls Home Internationals at Panmure Barry.
Roseanne Niven:
Not only Qualified to the matchplay stages of the British Women's Open Amateur Golf Championship at North Berwick but made it through to the semi final stages. She was 5th in the Finnish Open and was placed 7th at the Scottish Under 21 Girls Open Championship at Powfoot. The pinnacle of Roseanne’s achievement for this year was wining the British Women's Open Championship at the Malone Club in Belfast. Roseanne’s final round 69 took her into a sudden death play off with fellow scot Kylie Walker where she lifted the trophy following a birdie at the first extra hole. This win, entitles Roseanne to play in the Rioch British Women’s Open Championship at Royal Lytham St Annes in 2009. Roseanne has since went on to be selected for the Scottish Team at the World Amateur Team Championship in Adelaide.
Eve Muirhead:
Broke the Pitlochry Course record with a sparkling 69 during the qualifying round of the Highland Open and went on to win the event. She made her way through to the qualifying stages of the Scottish Girls (Close) Amateur Championship at Alyth and won her first round match but then came up against the eventual winner Carly in the second round. Eve placed 7th in the Scottish Under 21 girls open championship at Powfoot and qualified through to the matchplay stages of the British Girls Open Amateur Championship at Monifieth. She was the last Scot standing after two rounds. We can not ignore Eve’s other sporting achievement this year when she was named in the 6 strong ladies curling squad for the 2010 winter Olympics.
Emily Ogilvy:
Emily endured a very serious shoulder injury over the winter but she came back in great spirit making the county championship her first competitive round of the season. She then went onto qualify into the matchplay stages of the Scottish Amateur Golf Championship at Lossiemouth. Emily also qualified to the final stages of the British Women's Open Amateur Golf Championships at North Berwick and progressed to the final qualifying stages of the British Open at Berkshire. Emily was also selected to represent Scotland in the Ladies Home International Matches at Wrexham Golf Club.
Laura Walker:
County Champion 2008 and was the run away winner of the 2008 County Order of Merit.

Some time ago I reported on a Golfathon which was organised by Alex Bushby. Six of us took part playing 54 holes over Strathmore Golf Course. We started at 7.45am and had a 15 min break at 11.30 then the last two rounds were completed without a break and we finished the day at 8pm.
It really was a great day and we all even managed to enjoy ourselves!
A huge thank you to all the girls who took part plus all the other squad members who, although unavailable on the day, still contributed by getting sponsors or running raffles. We also had very kind contributions from individual members plus Strathmore Golf Centre were fantastic as they not only provided courtesy of the course but David also put up a very nice bottle of malt and sold raffle tickets all day, he also had a bucket for visitors to sponsor us and he sold a rounds of golf for 4 at Strathmore in aid of our funds. David also provided snacks for the girls at the end of play. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!
Catherine, our treasurer, has now got the final total for the monies raised and the grand total was a fantastic £1337.90.
WOW or what!! I really as so proud of the girls for all their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the whole year they really have been an absolute joy!
Many thanks to all who contributed and of course to the girls for all their efforts!
A very big thank you to Susan Arbuckle who has forwarded the final results of the 2008 Scratch League and Craigiehill with 11 points were the winners this year. In 2nd place was Alyth on 9 points. There were four teams on 8 points, Strathmore taking 3rd place on most games won.

The leading scores are as follows:
Par 72. Yardage:6431
Jacqueline Sneddon Grand Canyon 36-37 73 +1
2 Jennifer Lutz Grand Canyon 37- 38 75 +3

What a beautiful day and a superb golf course we enjoyed today at Torwoodlee. Apart from the golf the other most important aspect of the day is of course the catering and wow we were in for treat!!! With the most fantastic home baking it truly was fantastic.
The golf wasn't too shabby either with Janet Griffiths and Dawn Butchart top P&K scorers with net 75 only one shot of the winners. Unfortunately they were pipped for a prize with three 74's and two 74.5's this placed our players in 6th position just outside the prize-winners. Dawn and Janet also finished 3rd Scratch.
The full results were as follows:
1st: Susanne Ireland & Diane Moncreiff (Midlothian) (11) 74 bih
2nd: Rachael McLean & Mary Miller (Aberdeenshire) (16) 74 bih
3rd: Jackie Brown & Lynne Fenton(Angus) (3) 74
4th: Sarah Tryon & Louise Ballantyne (Dunbartonshire & Argyll) (10.5) 74.5 better last 6 holes,
5th Joie Robertson & Karen Burns (Stirling & Clackmannan) (8.5) 74.5.
Next year the finals will be held at Baberton Golf Club, don't know about you but I have started practising already!Wednesday, September 24, 2008
Tomorrow Torwoodlee Golf Club will stage the Commonwealth Spoons and four couples from P&K will be making their way to take part.
The first qualifiers Carol Lambie and Lenore Kyle play at 10:48, they are followed at 11.12 by Ann McGregor and Joan Miller, Dawn Butchart and Janet Griffiths are next at 12.24 followed by last but not least Moira Middleton and Frances Anderson at 12.32. Gillian Wallace and Esther Martin who qualified in 2nd position are unable to attend as Esther's son is getting married on Friday so we send our very best wishes to Esther for a lovely day. Also Ann Spense and Meriel Walker had to withdraw as Ann has broken a finger. We hope this heals very quickly Ann. Therefore after two pull outs Ann and Joan and Dawn and Janet are replacements.
We wish all the couples the very best of luck and I will let you know how we all fair!!

I am so very proud of all the girls who took part this weekend at Inchmarlo at the Scottish County Finals. All eight girls contributed to a fantastic weekend. Unfortunately we did not lift the trophy but we did ourselves and our county proud.
We got off to a bad start on Friday when we lost our match against Renfrewshire 7-2 but we came out ready for action on Saturday and won the match against borders 8-1. But after a gallant effort on Sunday against Fife we went lost a very close match 5-4. All girls were great but our top scorer this weekend was Annabel Niven who gained 4.5 points out of the 5 games she played.

A huge thank you must also got to eight very loyal caddies and supporters who stayed all weekend. They were Janet Griffiths, Sal Shepherd, Carol Lambie, Pat Colquhoun, Emma Napper, Gwen Lambie, Jane Yellowlees, Meg Marshall and Pam Drysdale. Thank you all you were fantastic. Also thank you to all the Aberdeen ladies who came along and offered their support.
I would also like to thank Lenore and Shona for their support, help and friendship throughout, not only the weekend but the whole year. I don't know how I would manage without them.
But most of all to the Team who are an absolute pleasure to Captain. I don't think I have ever met a better bunch of girls. Their commitment and support of each other and P&K is fantastic. Well done all of you.

Well done all who took part.
The UBC Girls Championship was played over the Loch Ness course at Castle Heather Inverness yesterday and sisters Emily and Megan Aird flew the flag for P&K.
The sisters both returned scratch scores of 85 both also had exactly the same halves -45 -40. Emily won the tie breaker by virtue of better last six to take 3rd prize in the scratch section. As only one prize can be won by each player and as scratch takes precedence, Megan did not leave empty handed. She picked up the best nett prize. Well done to both girls.
The winner of the scratch was fifteen-year-old Hannah McCook (Abernethy).

Good luck to 5 team members and one very silly Captain who are taking part in a sponsored Golfathon tomorrow at Strathmore Golf Centre. The day will begin at 7.30 with round number one then be followed by a slightly weary round 2 at 11.45 then the day will be complete with an exhausting round 3 at around 4.30.
The five team members participating are Alexandra Bushby who has organised the event, Carol Muir, Annabel Niven, Emily Ogilvy and Laura Walker. I am hoping they will help me round, if not carry me round on the day! The three remaining team members are unfortunately unavailable, Carly is competing in Belgium, Eve Muirhead is on olympic curling duty and Jillian Milne has family commitments but they have all been involved in the gaining sponsors. It is fantastic to see the girls supporting the county and helping to fund the County Finals in September. I am very proud of them all.
We wish the girls all the very best of luck and hope the sun will shine for them all! I will post the final tally soon.

Many thanks to all who played and a special thank you for all who sponored the team and bought tickets for the golf balls.
Eve, in her own admition didn't hit the ball as well as she had been over the first five holes but her amazing fightback started with a birdie at the eighth to go to four down. Another birdie at the 10th brought the deficit to three. Unfortunately she lost the 11th to a birdie to go back to four down.
Congratulations go to Team Member Alexandra Bushby who qualified into the match-play stages of the English Women’s Open Mid-Amateur Championship at Wallasey. The Tournament is open to players aged 25 or over. Alex made it all the way into the semi-finals yesterday where she was unfortunately beaten by Warwickshire’s Charlotte Dalton. Alex played great golf all week winning her first match against Welsh internationalist Laura Collin (John O'Gaunt) by 1 hole. She then met Stephanie Evans (Vale of Llangollen) in round two again winning by 1 hole. Yesterday her quarterfinal was against Kate Whitmore (Sandiway) and Alex again repeated the score line from Wednesday by winning again by 1 hole. She then made her way into the Semi-Final yesterday afternoon and even following a wonderful display of golf including an eagle 2 on the 267 yard sixth where she drove the green and holed a four foot putt, she failed to continue her winning streak losing the match 4 and 3.

Congratulations go to Team member Eve Muirhead who has qualified into the match play stages of the British Girls at Monifieth. Eve returned scores of 74 and 78. Eve is the third top Scot of the qualifiers with Kelsey MacDonald on 73, 71 and Racheal Watton 77 and 74. Fantastic news Eve. I am lucky enough to be on caddy duty tomorrow for Eve and will keep you up to date as much as possible how she does.
Fellow team members Carly Booth and Annabel Niven failed to make it to the final 64. Carly returned scores of 79, 78 and Annabel returned 82 and 75 both ended equal 80th.

Today sees the start of the British Girls at Monifieth today. With only 64 players making it through to the matchplay stages, which begins on Wednesday, our P&K hopes are with three players. They are Team members Carly Booth, Eve Muirhead and Annabel Niven.
So far Annabel and Eve are the only two to finish their fiurst round, Annabel is 10 over par and Eve has returned a fantastic 2 over. At present Eve is sitting 2nd top Scot just behind Kelsey MacDonald who is 1 over.
Carly has not completed her round yet and was 4 over par after 9.
Will keep you posted as much as possible!

The singles matches between Scotland and Wales are proving to be closely fought. To date Carly Booth has won her match 3&1 along with Kelsey who had a convincing win of 5&4. However the remaining 4 matches are hanging in the balance with Lesley Aitkens 3 down thru 15, Eilidh Briggs 2 down thru 14 and Rebecca Wilson all square thru 15. Scotland requires one match to go there way to win the days play.
Carly is out first in this afternoons singles matches against Wales. She tees off at 1.10pm. The full draw is as follows: Wales first.
13:10: Natasha Gobey v Carly Booth
13:20: Laura Watkins v Kelsey MacDonald
13:30: Amy Boulden v Rachael McQueen
13:40: Katherine O'Connor v Lesley Atkins
13.50: Gemma Bradbury v Rebecca Wilson
14:00: Kelly Miller v Eilidh Briggs
Following the morning foursomes Scotland are leading Wales 2-1. County Team member Carly Booth was paired with Kelsey MacDonald, they beat the lead-off Welsh pairing of Chloe Williams and Katie Bradbury 5&4. Rebecca Wilson and Sammy Vass were the other winning Scots, they beat Kelly Miller and Gemma Bradbury 3&1. Wales did gain one point in the third match in which Amy Boulden and Katherine O'Connor won by 4 and 3 against P&K's Annabel Niven and Eilidh Briggs.

Carly has won the Scottish Girls (Close) Amateur Championship with a 4&3 win over fellow Scottish Team mate Kelsy MacDonald.
Carly played some magnificent golf all week which ended by being crowned Champion. I lost count of the amount of birdies and eagles Carly produced this week she truly is a great talent.
I would also like to thank all the P&K Members who came along and supported the girls and her fellow County team mates who came along to give their support.
P&K had another win with junior member Emily Aird winning the consolation handicap prize, well done Emily.
I great week of golf all round.
