Secretary's notepad The P& K Masters is well underway and results already percolating in. Super weather, fiery greens and some close ties enjoyed by players this month. Bell Trophy wins for: Auchterarder; Murrayshall; Comrie; Blair Atholl; Alyth; Muthill; P Academy; Kinross; D&B; Whitemuir; Culcrieff; Aberfeldy who will now join: KJ VI; Bishopshire; Dunwhinny; Taymouth in the 2nd round. Coronation Trophy, where Kinross; King James VI; Alyth; Craigie Hill ; Blairgowrie; Perth Academy  and Auchterarder at the time of writing await the remaining first round winner of the Muckhart/Crieff tie;  in the second round. Aberfeldy Golf Club hosted the Stroyan Trophy on 22nd May and the event was won by Kinross on a day of bright sunshine. Thanks to Willie in the clubhouse and Charlie Thom for all help in organising.   A number of withdrawals this year suggest the date perhaps should be changed for next season, as it clashed with some clubs’ club championship qualifiers - good to get feedback on this from clubs, please let me know. The County Reciprocal scheme was launched this month and full details are on the website at http://www.perthandkinrosscountygolf.net/reciprocal-golf.php Go and check it out now!!!See what The County have been doing with co-operation with our clubs to help you and local golf. It offers preferential rates to all members of Perth and Kinross affiliated clubs at other clubs in the county who have signed up. We have 18 clubs on board now and some still in pipeline and all are welcome to take part. Booking Conditions apply but it’s all on the website. Reciprocal adds value to your membership, so get involved and go and play a super local course with 3 pals and enjoy that 4 ball relaxed format, in different surroundings and scenery AND support a fellow local club in the process. Amalgamation with Perth and Kinross Ladies Golfing Association is well advanced in terms of constitution and we hope to be in a position to present the case and receive the member clubs’ blessings at the AGM this year. SGL re-organisation might mean Scottish golf goes to a regional structure and the role for the County completely changes. We feel we will be stronger as a combined Ladies and Gents group and thus better able to represent our clubs if they should so choose. The Clubs who are crucial to the whole thing will rightly have the final decision. Without Golf Clubs we will have no golf and the County have to represent you, the club member, better to SGL and the wider world if we are to have any meaningful role. Champion of Champions, in its traditional 2 round format over the Lansdowne track it proved as usual, a stiff challenge to the club top dogs. This year we had the inaugural County Junior C of C, over one round, but again off the tiger course testing our youngsters to the full. Blairgowrie’s own Andrew Gibson emerged from the Junior field as winner with a very creditable 76 just pipping Strathmore’s Alex Simpson 77 and Calum Graham Crieff third with 80. In the Gents Crieff’s Davie Simpson’s better second round saw him through ahead of local stalwart Glenn Campbell on 146 with a really creditable David Morrison, Dunning in third 78/75 - someone to keep an eye on. Alan McLean Alyth had an excellent 70 in the first round but fell away in round two to finish fourth. Thanks to the Blairgowrie club for the arrangements and use of the course again, it was as always very welcoming.

Message from the President  With the season now in full swing - and a few weeks of good weather - our county courses are starting to look and play very good. Junior and senior teams have been performing well so please read over the event reports on the website. I’m sure the strong results will continue throughout the year. I’d like to congratulate Andrew Gibson of Blairgowrie Golf Club who was recently crowned Junior Champion of Champions and to Crieff’s David Simpson for claiming top spot in the senior event. We are delighted to have received a strong entry for the GS Group Perth and Kinross Masters. There are many interesting first round matches to be played on or before Sunday, June 19 and I wish you all the best of luck. Secretary David Ramsay has a new senior event lined up for later on this season so make sure to look out for an announcement in the coming weeks. I’m pleased to report that our amalgamation with the Ladies section is going well through our joint committees and we will continue to inform the county of progress moving forward. Junior Golf

The first competition of the year was the Strokeplay Championships at Strathmore; well done to Cameron Grieve for winning this event. Well done also to Kirsty Brodie who had a brilliant 74 and best gross score of the day. Next up was the U14 coaching medal round the Wee Course at Blairgowrie which was won by Gregor Graham  with a scratch 64. Oliver Devlin won the handicap with a net 54. Next event was the Matchplay Championship played over Pitlochry. Well done to all 16 players who qualified through from the Strokeplay, some great golf was played and it was again Cameron Grieve who came out on top in a nail biting final against Jamie Roberts, at the third extra hole. The first match of the year was played at Crow Wood Golf Club. We had a mix of U16 & U18 players but unfortunately our boys were defeated 6.5 – 3.5. The Race to Kingsbarns started in April, where Alyth Golf Club held the first junior open of the year. There was a fantastic turnout from the kids. Please check theCounty website for all further junior opens over the summer holidays, where you can enter any Junior Open competition for £5 The U14 Handicap Championship (Spring meeting) was won by Gregor Graham and Alex Simpson scored a superb 69 to record the best scratch score of the day. A new event was added to the fixture list this year' The Junior Champion of Champions which was won by Andrew Gibson of Blairgowrie who is the first name on the new Bradley Neil Trophy, donated by Rodney Neil. The Junior committee took the decision to change the mini foursomes this year to Pinehurst Greensomes. The new format was a hit with the players and everyone seemed to have a great day; well done to Tom and Jack Cahalin from Dunning Golf Club for winning this event. The second match of the year was for our U16 squad, where they played a very strong Lothian’s team. The match finished 6-6, where victory was snatched when our opponentsholed a 25 putt in the last match on the last green, either way well done guys for a terrific performance. And finally well done to Calum Graham, Jamie Roberts, Alex Simpson and Robert Watson for being selected to represent P&K in the Scottish Area Team Championships. The guys did well, despite not winning but I’m sure learned a lot from the weekend. A big thank you to all clubs who have hosted the Junior competitions and matches, and to our Junior Committee who put in a lot of their time helping run all the events

Lansdowne 40 - Open Texas Scramble The Lansdowne course  is celebrating 40 years of golf this year by hosting an Open Texas Scramble. The event, which is being held on Sunday 4th September, is open to teams of three at £100 per team, including soup and sandwiches afterwards. Times will be available from 9am until 3pm approximately. Entries will  be accepted on a first come, first served basis. The Lansdowne course was designed by Peter Alliss and the late Dave Thomas and opened in 1976. It offered members of the Club a second 18 hole course as a sister to the famous Rosemount. The Lansdowne course has been redeveloped and refined over the 40 years and has hosted a number of notable events through the years. Back in 2011, Andy Sullivan, a potential member of Darren Clarke’s Ryder Cup team this year, won the Scottish Amatuer Strokeplay over the Lansdowne course, kick-starting his career in the big leagues. NORTHERN DIVISION INTER COUNTIES JAMBOREE

The Jamboree took place at Edzell over the weekend. The weather was not kind with most of the play taking place in a heavy drizzle. Fortunately the sun decided to shine on the final afternoon.

As spectators we saw some wonderful golf played over the weekend particularly in the singles when birdies were required to win a hole.

Congratulations to Aberdeenshire who were the overall winners. Our P&K girls were joint second with Angus. The results were so close with our girls being the only team to beat Aberdeenshire.

Aberdeenshire won on games won 18.5 with P&K and Angus both on 14.5


Well played girls.

We also heard at the weekend that Kirstie Brodie, Strathmore, who could not be at Edzell because she was playing in the Stephen Gallacher Foundation event at Cardrona, has been selected to represent Scotland in the European girls' amateur team championship in Norway next month and for the European Young Masters in Switzerland.

COUNTY GIRLS AT MURRAYSHALL

The Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Schoolgirls Championships were held at Murrayshall GC on Tuesday 7th June.

Congratulations to Kirstie Brodie who finished 2nd in the competition which was cut to one round when play was suspended for 'imminent thunder & lightning'.  Kirsty was 2 shots behind the winner Jennifer Rankine (Haggs Castle).

Perth & Kinross had five of our Junior members playing: Kirtsy Brodie (72), Megan Ashley (78), Zoe Morton (86), Shannon Pook (94), Katriona Taylor (95).

UPDATE ON JAMBOREE, NORTH OF SCOTLAND & SPOONS

Jamboree

The North Division Inter-County Jamboree takes place 11th- 13th June at Edzell. That's next weekend folks.  We would be very grateful for caddies and supporters to help encourage our team particulary for the singles matches. Caddies are not expected to do anything other than push a trolley and provide moral support. Volunteers welcome.

Our team is Laura Campbell & Isla Moncrieff, Pitlochry: Shonagh Raitt, Crieff: Emily Ogilvy, Jen Saxton, Laura Walker & Eilidh Watson, Muckhart.

Matches consist of 3 two ball foursomes in the morning (Saturday start times 11.00a.m. – 11.15a.m, Sunday & Monday 8.30a.m. – 8.45a.m.) followed by 6 Singles in the afternoon (Saturday start times 3.30p.m – 4.07p.m., Sunday & Monday 1.00p.m – 1.37p.m.).

North of Scotland

We have extended the closing date for the North of Scotland until 18th June. There is still time to get your entry in. (Forms on link at RH of page.)  There are scratch and handicap prizes so any P&K member can enter and potentially do well on Dunblane, a P&K course.  P&K had a winner last year so come on ladies support this event.

Commonwealth Spoons

We had a bit of a stir at the Commonwealth Spoon qualifier at Dunning last week. Whilst the course was in excellent condition, unfortunately Dunning had also scheduled a men's competition immediately in front of us. In an attempt to squeeze everyone in, they tried to compress the time between starts to 10 mins instead of 15. This just made a bad situation worse but was entirely outwith our control. After our committee meeting this week we agreed that the Commonwealth Spoons qualifier in future will be held on an 18 hole course. We have written to Dunning regarding the complaints we received and they have admitted they were at fault and have offered their apologies.

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS FINAL DAY

What a wonderful weekend of golf at Alyth. The Final matches were played in great spirit and were very exciting to watch. The course was in great condition and we are grateful to Alyth Golf Club for all their help and support.

The Championship was contested by Jen Saxton, the holder and Nicola Robertson. It was nip and tuck for most of the game then Jen Saxton just pulled ahead in the final holes. Winning 4&3 to retain the title.

Junior member Megan Thom and Helen Lang had a marathon battle which went all the way to the 20th hole where Megan sank her put for a par to close the match.

Congratulations to everyone who took part - players, caddies and the gallery who helped make it a special occasion.
