Strathmore Golf Centre will be hosting their annual Junior Open on Tuesday 31st July. Strathmore are great supporters of Junior and County Golf and I would ask you to encourage all your Junior members to enter this fantastic tournament. Prizes will be awarded to Girls and Boys in age categories for both Scratch and Handicap plus trophies for the best overall in both Scratch and Handicap for both Girls and Boys. All to play for for any standard of young golfer.

Message from the Captain

Many congratulations to Isla Moncrieff of Aberfeldy who kept the flag flying for Perth and Kinross at the North of Scotland Championships at Blairgowrie.

In the final Isla met Molly Stewart of Murcar Links having knocked out Tegan Sievewright 4 & 2 in the morning semis.

In a close match, Isla was 3 down and almost had a hole in 1 at the par 3 15th. This spurred her on and stepping on to the 18th tee she was all square. Molly sank her putt on the 18th for a 4 , winning the match by 1 hole. This was Isla’s first time playing in the North of Scotland and is a tremendous achievement for her. No doubt she had good advice from her caddie, Caroline Dunbar!!!

 

Eilidh Watson also won 1st handicap int he qualifying round with a nett 71 and Emily aird was 2nd Scratch with 73. The CSS was 74

This was a real ding dong affair with Sheena Wood eventually winning on the 19th hole with a birdie 4.

Another closely contested match between two ladies playing well below their handicaps. Molly Stewart emerged victorious after holding her nerve to sink a putt for a 4 at the 18th.

The Captain would like to pass on her sincere thanks to Blairgowrie Golf Club for hosting the tournament and to all those who stayed on to support the finals.

 A perfect day for our meeting at Aberfeldy. Glorious sunshine and not a breath of wind and great to see everyone in shirt sleeves instead of being wrapped up in several layers of clothing and waterproofs. The course was in excellent condition and just a pity the meeting clashed with the Midland Vets at Burntisland otherwise we would have had more playing. Those that were there thoroughly enjoyed then day and thanks to Aberfeldy Club for a warm welcome and good food.

The tournament kicks off tomorrow at Monifieth continuing until Monday. The weekend is a round-robin event with P&K, Angus, Northern Counties and Aberdeenshire all eager to win through to the Scottish Finals which takes place in September at Montrose.

Foursomes will be played in the in the every morning followed by Singles in the afternoon.

P&K send warm congratulations to the GB&I team who won the Curtis Cup today at Nairn by won point from the USA team. This is extra special as GB&I have not lifted the cup since 1996. Captain Tegwan Matthews showed great leadership and rallied her team following what was a disapointing first day.

Well done, great golf and supberb that the Curtis Cup, the Ryder Cup, the Walker Cup and the Solheim Cup are all now in our possession on this side of the Atlantic.

Here's hoping I was the only member to turn up to Comrie last night not knowing it was cancelled! Sorry I didn't post yesterday regarding the cancellation but clearly I was unaware! Below is a note from the Captain regarding the re-arrangements.

Commonwealth Spoons at Comrie

Unfortunately, due to heavy rain, the course became unplayable at Comrie this morning and those already started on their round had to be called in.

This meeting has been re-arranged for Thursday 26th July at Comrie. Please send your entries to Carol Lambie as before. Those who had entries in for to-day will require to re-enter as we know some cannot manage the new date. By the same token, we hope others who could not play to-day will be able to come on the 26th July.

Yesterday was the P&K Juniors Championship, below is a report from Lenore Kyle.  

Perth & Kinross Ladies County Juniors Played their Junior Championships at Crieff Golf Club on Sunday 27^th May. It was a delightful change to play in glorious sunshine instead of torrential rain and a howling gale! Consequently the scoring was very good.

Nine girls competed for the 18 Hole Championships on the Ferntower Course.

Eilidh Watson could top her dad who was Scottish boys champion in 1973

Muckhart’s Eilidh Watson, pictured by Cal Carson Golf Agency, put in a top class performance in the Scottish women's amateur Championship at Tain last week, reaching the semi-final stage after a 19th hole win against the No 3 seed and 2009 champion Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm). Eilidh was at one stage four down to Megan and still one down on the 18th tee so it was quite a comeback.

While losing quite heavily in the semi final to the top seed, Jane Turner (Craigielaw), it looks increasing likely that Eilidh Watson will eventually outperform father Bobby who was a formidable junior golfer, winning the Scottish boys' match-play championship at North Berwick in 1973.

EILIDH LOSES OUT A PLACE IN THE FINAL

P&K Team member Eilidh Watson lost out gaining a place in tomorrows final when she was defeated this afternoon by an on form number one seed Jane Turner.

Eilidh has certainly done herself, and her county, proud this week.

P&K PLAYERS IN SEMI FINALS

Was just looking back through old records and it would appear that the last time we had someone from P&K in the semi finals of the Scottish Ladies was Emily Ogilvy in 2007 and hopefully Eilidh will do as well as Emily as Emily did make it to the final. She beat Michelle Thomson who was to later turn professional, in the semi’s. She then played against Jenna Wilson in the final who is now also a professional. Jenna beat Heather Macrae who too is now professional.

Just shows how good you have to be to make it to the semi finals of the Scottish!!

By the way our Emily got beat 2&1 in the 2007 final.

FANTASTIC NEWS

Eilidh Watson has made it through to the semi finals of the Scottish Ladies (Close) Championship by defeating 2009 Scottish Champion and Internationalist Megan Briggs at the 19th hole.

Eilidh who was 3 down after 8 holes, 2 down after 11 holes and again 3 down after 13 holes showed great strength of character by never giving up then finally winning on the 19th hole!

The semi finals will take place this afternoon with Eilidh playing against the number one seed Jane Turner who beat Susan Wood this morning. The other semi final is between Megan Briggs sister Eilidh and Laura Murray.

CONGRATUALTIONS EILIDH

P&K member Eilidh Watson has made it through to the quarter finals of the Scottish Ladies (Close) Amatuer Championship today.
Eilidh won her second match today against Jemma Chalmers 3&1. Eilidh will now face Scottish Internaltionist Megan Briggs tomorrow teeing off at 8:40. Good Luck from all at P&K.

Eilidh Watson has made it through the first round of the Scottish Ladies (Close) Championship at Tain this morning defeating her opponent Rachel Polson 2&1. She now plays Jemma Chalmers who beat Ailisa Summers this morning 1 hole.

Eilidh will tee of at 2pm this afternoon.

MUNROSS TROPHY

The Munross Trophy takes place on Sunday 27th May at Montrose Links. This is a 36 hole competitions and is also an order of SLGA Order of Merit tournament. There is a limit of a 15 handicap.

Unfortunately, to date, there are no entries from P&K and I thought perhaps this could be ideal practice on a links course with the Jamboree at Monifieth this year!

P&K's only representative at the Scottish Ladies (close) Championship, Eilidh Watson has qualified through to the Matchplay stages which begins today.

Eilidh returned scores of 83 and 84 on a wind swept Tain course and qualified in 22nd position. She will play Rachel Polson this morning in the first round,

EILIDH BRAVES THE STORM

Junior member Eilidh Watson braved what was another awful day of wind at Tain today and returned a very respectable 83. Eilidh is sitting in joint 14th position out of 65 entrants.

Eilidh would have been even higher up the leader board had it not been for a quadruple bogey on the tough par 4 10th hole.

Eilidh Watson (Muckhart), who was our top qualifier at Auchterarder but unable to play in the Matchplay stages, is taking part in the Scottish Ladies (close) Amateur Championship which teed off today at Tain Golf Club.

Many of the players have still to tee of but at present Eilidh is sitting in 11th position with 4 over par through 9 holes. Tain is a tough track and in the wind will be playing hard. The leader at present is sitting on 2 over par through 9.

'The finals of our Championships were played on Sunday at Auchterarder Golf Club in horrendous conditions. The morning stayed mainly dry but blowing a gale. The handicap final was a very close fought battle, the winner being Catherine Peebles, Alyth with a 2 and 1 victory over Sally Crystal, Taymouth Castle.  In the semi-finals of the scratch, Eve Muirhead beat Gwen Lambie 5 and 4, and by the same margin, Jillian Milne beat Nicola Robertson. The rain came pouring down in the afternoon and combined with the gale force wind made play extremely difficult.Thankfully, we were able to complete the match. Again, it was a very close game with Eve Muirhead, Pitlochry defeating Jillian Milne, Craigie Hill. by 1 hole. Players and spectators were glad to get into the clubhouse, very wet and rather cold.

Thanks to Auchterarder Golf  Club for all their help and having us for our Championships.

 The raffle at the qualifying round on Monday realised the magnificent sum of £215. Sincere thanks to everyone who donated prizes and bought tickets.

The result of the Lottery Bonus Ball is not yet known but will be advised when finalised. Again, thanks to everyone who bought a number.

EVE MUIRHEAD IS COUNTY CHAMPION

County Team player Eve Muirhead today won the County Championship 2012 at Auchterarder. In what can only be described as horrific playing conditions Eve defeated last years finalist Jillian Milne on the last hole. The weather was possibly the worse I have ever seen during a county final but both players put on a magnificent display for all the very brave souls who came along to support them. Well done to all who walked round today the players both greatly appreciated your presence.

Past County Champion Jillian certainly had the advantage throughout the match. She was 2 up on two separate occasions. However Eve, who was never up, clinched the title on the 18th.

Eve, a Olympic curler and current European curling champion, has always been a great supporter of P&K and I know she is extremely proud to be our Champion. Well done Eve

Catherine Pebbles of Alyth won the Gibb Trophy this morning in a very tight match. Catherine won 2&1.

RESULTS FROM AUCHTERARDER

The top two seeds of the Championship were knocked out of the matchplay stages this afternoon. Laura Walker lost out to Gwen Lambie in the Quarter Finals and Steph Crolla was defeated by number 7 seed Caroline Dunbar in the first round. The match of the day had to be from defending champion Nicola Robertson who in the quarter finals won her match on a record making 24th hole. A fantastic match with some brilliant golf played by both.
The number one and two seed in the Gibb Trophy made it through the quarter finals however both were knocked out in the Semis this afternoon. Catherine Peebles and Sally Crystal will play the final tomorrow at 10:16.

Matchplay rounds of the County Championship and Gibb Trophy start in earnest tomorrow and it would be brilliant if you could come along and support the players.

The first match tees off at 9:52, the last morning tee time is 11.20. The afternoon starts at 14.32 and the final of Saturday's tee times is 15:12.

The Semi Finals of the Championship will be played on Sunday Morning teeing off at 10:00 and 10:08 then the final will tee off at 14:32.
The final of the Gibb Trophy will be contested at 10:16.

As with previous years I am sure the golf on displayed will be worth watching so please come along and enjoy the weekend at Auchterarder.

On what can only be described as appalling conditions, this evenings scores were incredible! Junior, Eilidh Watson was the leading qualifier with an excellent one over par 72. The sad news is that Eilidh is not available to play at the weekend due to her up and coming exams. With Eilidh unavailable the top spot goes to Laura Walker who along with Steph Crolla who both returned 74 with Laura taking the number one seed by virtue of a better inward half. Irene Moncur, Ilsa Moncrieffe and Eilidh Watson all on 68 and Margaret Ewen, Joy Gordon, Jennifer Saxton and Steph Crolla on 69. However all these player are either unavailable or in the Scratch Championship making Susan Jones the top seed for the Gibb Trophy. Susan returned a 70.

P&K PAST TEAM MEMBER FIRST WIN ON L.E.T.

Carly Booth who represented P&K during her amatuer career has won her first Ladies European Tour Event and to make it extra special she won on home turf. Carly took the title by pulling away from a jam packed leader board to win the Aberdeen Assett Management Ladies Scottish Open presented by EventScotland on a glorious final day at Archerfield Links in East Lothian yesterday.

Carly who is only 19 and lives in Comrie fired rounds of 70, 71 and 71 to end on a total of four under par 212, having played through near-freezing conditions earlier in the week. She ended a stroke clear of England’s Florentyna Parker and Australian Frances Bondad.

Carly said she was 'so happy' to have won and all of us from P&K are delighted for her. Well done Carly, lets hope its the first of many!

I was very lucky to have had Carly as a foursome partner when she played at County level and I always knew, even when she was only 12, that she had the talent to make it at professional level.

ADULT AND JUNIOR DAY AT STRATHMORE

Yesterday was our annual Adult and Junior Day at Strathmore Golf Centre. As always, the course was in excellent condition. Bright sunshine but a bitterly cold wind which made it difficult. However, all the girls coped well and produced some excellent scores. The juniors played very well and everyone seemed to enjoy the day. Thank you to all the seniors who turned out to play with them and enjoyed the experience. Thanks to Strathmore for granting us couresty for the day and for the excellent food which follwed play

SLGA UNDER 16 OPEN STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

The SLGA Under 16 Open Stroke Play Championship tees off at Strathmore Golf Centre on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th April (practice day Wednesday 11th). The entry for this event has been tremendous with 127 girls entering for only 102 places. Unfortunately the success of the tournament does mean that the players of over 14.1 will not be in the ballot.

However we do have representation from P&K with Strathmore home player Kirstie Brodie, Jennifer Saxton (Kinross) and Claire Gadsby (Crieff). The tee times for the girls on Thursday are Kirsty 12.50 at Tee 1, Jennifer 13.20 at Tee 1 and Claire 13.25 at tee 10.
