KING JAMES VI MEETING

At last after a very long and very cold winter, the season is at last here!! It is now time to dust off your clubs, polish your shoes and most importantly get your entries off for our very first meeting of the season. Lenore is taking your entries for our first meeting which will be held at King James VI on April 14th.

SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR



As has already been posted The P&K County Team won the P&K Sports Personality of Year Team Award earlier this month. Again unfortunately I was unable to attend as I was on holiday. Lenore very kindly has passed on the above photos for us to enjoy!

COUNTIES CENTENARY LUNCH

On Saturday 7th March a table of 16 past Captains and Champions attended a luncheon hosted by SLGA to celebrate the Counties centenary year. Unfortunately as I was on holiday I was unable to attend however I believe a good afternoon was had by all who attended. Above are a few snaps Lenore took on the day.

QUIZ NIGHT PRESENTATION

My husband Iain and I were invited to represent Strathmore Golf Centre in the Alyth Quiz League. We along with fellow team members David Douglas and Peter Howell played most of the 18 week long tournament. Patrica Howell, Bob Norman and David Norman also played on the evenings when one or other of us were unavailable. It was great fun and I was very pleased to take part.

Apart from having a sociable evening the object is to raise monies for local charities, clubs and organisations. At the end of the season each team take a share of the monies made and decide whom they wish to benefit from the cheque. I was delighted when the team decided to donate their share to P&K Junior Girls.

Last night Junior convener Carol Lambie and Pam Drysdale came along to accept a cheque for £150 on the counties behalf and my thanks go to them for coming along for the evening.

Presentations also took place for the winners of the trophies and as you can see from the photo below, the Strathmore Team also won a trophy however it was not the one we craved it was indeed the 'wooden spoon'! We were all presented with a wooden log engraved with our names!

Many thanks once again to Strathmore Golf Centre for their fantastic and continued support and especially David Douglas who organised the team so well all winter.

WORLD CLASS EVE

Team member Eve Muirhead was crowned Junior Curling World Champion 2009 in Vancouver yesterday. Eve retained her crown after a nail biting finish against Canada.

This is the third year running Eve has been in the winning Scottish side, the first year as the third man and the last two as skip.

As Eve's team mates make their way home, Eve is traveling on to Korea for the World Ladies Championship with her senior team mates.

Eve, you really are a talent and we are all very proud of you.

We wish you well in Korea!

WELL DONE OUR GIRLS!!

I am just back from my holidays and was over-whelmed when I received a phone call in Tenerife from our Team to tell me that we had won the Perth and Kinross Sports Personality of the Year Team Award.

When I first sent off the nomination I believed our team deserved all the praise and recognition that was available and I am so pleased that I am not the only one who feels this way! The team have been outstanding as both a team and also with their own personal achievements. But what pleases me most is they act as a team both during team events and matches but also during individual events throughout the year in tournaments both home and abroad, I am very very proud of them all.

I also feel credit is due to the hard work of the officials who spend their valuable time organising coaching, matches and of course the Jamboree. The whole committee are fantastic but special thanks must go to Shona who is a brilliant match secretary and of course Lenore who is a great vice. I know the team really appreciate the time and effort involved.

A brilliant start to the year for P&K and I know the start of another great year.

Well done all!

P & K County Team win Sports Council Team of the Year Award

Our girls have done it again, at the Perth and Kinross Sports Personality of the Year Awards they were presented with the trophy for Team of the Year.

The award was sponsored by Perth and Kinross Sports Council and presented by Doug Yeats.

Well done girls first trophy this year, lots more to come!

CARLY AND EMILY MISS THE CUT

The Spanish women's open amateur golf championship at Las Palmas on the Canary Island continues tomorrow minus Carly and Emily. Carly had what was a nightmare 85 in the second round and along with Emily will bow out of the matchplay stages. However I am sure they are both keen to fly back for some home comforts.

SPANISH OPEN

Emily and Carly's first competitive play this season did not start well. Their accommodation seems to be a bit of a nightmare and poor Emily has been effected by sun stroke. Not really the best way to be going into a tournament. After the first days play the lack of sleep and being unwell seems to have reflected in Emily's score.

Fellow Team member Carly Booth seems to be coping better and has returned a very credible three over par 74 which places her in joint 14th, seven shots behind German, Nicola Rossler. Carly birdied the short eighth and two par-5s, the ninth and 18th in halves of 35 (level par) and 39 (three over). She bogeyed the fourth, fifth, 10th, 11th, 13th and 15th.

Following the first round there are 36 players with scores of 76 or better and eight of them are on 76. The cut off seems be likely to be around 152. Which means that Emily will be unlikely to qualify after returning a 17-over-par 88.

We wish them well today.

CONGRATULATIONS EVE

Huge congratulations go to Squad member Eve Muirhead who made her own piece of curling history on Sunday. Eve won 10-5 over Stirling’s Kelly Wood in the final of the Columba Cream Scottish Ladies Championship. This makes Eve the youngest-ever skip to become national champion – in a season where she already holds the Scottish Junior Crown (not to mention the World Junior title). This is a massive achievement for Eve who was extremely quick to praise her curling team mates.

Eve's performance in the final yesterday will be screened on BBC1 at 11.20pm on 24th Feb (tomorrow).

Eve will now make her way to Vancouver for the World Junior Championships from March 5th to 15th then onto Korea from 21st to 29th March for the World Ladies Championships.

CARLY AND EMILY HEAD TO GRAN CANARIA

Team members Carly Booth and Emily Ogilvy (pictured above with the North Divisional Trophy) are flying to what will hopefully be a much warmer climate this weekend to take part in the Spanish Ladies Open Amateur Championship held over the Real Club De Golf De Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. This event is a Ladies European Amateur Ranking event and is also one of only four European Qualification Events for the PING Junior Solheim Cup.

Both girls will travel on Saturday and the program is as follows:

Monday Feb 23rd: First Practice Round

Tuesday Feb 24th: Second Practice Round

Wednesday Feb 25th: First Stroke Play qualifying round (18 holes)

Thursday Feb 26th: Second Stroke Play Qualifying round (18 holes)

Friday Feb 27th: First Match Play Round (16 qualifiers)

Second Match Play round (8 qualifiers)

Saturday Feb 28th: Third Round Matchplay (Quarter Final Match play)

Fouth Round Matchplay (Semi-Finals)

Sunday March 1st: Final over 18 holes. 13.30h approx Prize Giving Ceremony.

We will keep a close eye on Carly and Emily and try as much as possible to keep you up to date with the results.

Carly and Emily are being joined on their trip with fellow Scot Kyllie Walker.

2009 SUBSCRIBTIONS

You should all have now received the mailing inviting you to renew your membership. My thanks go to Lenore who very cleverly produced this years Fixture Card. I also hope you have enjoyed reading the Newsletter and I hope you have all spotted the deliberate mistake!! I stated that the Centenary Event was taking place on Monday 9th August when in fact it should read Monday August 17th!! The fixture card is correct.

As you can see we have a great range of course to play this year and of course with the centenary event we have 9 meetings. It is really nice to have something to look forward to other than fighting your way through snow at the moment.

P&K GLENEAGLES SCHOLARSHIP

Over the last number of years Perth and Kinross Ladies County Golf Association have been very honoured in being granted the privilege of offering a Gleneagles Scholarship to four girls from the Perth and Kinross County squads. This scholarship is open to all our junior girls under 18 years of age on January 1st and provides the four girls with full use of the Golf Academy including additional coaching throughout the year, full membership to all three Gleneagles courses and of course use of the Dormy House and changing facilities. As this scholarship is such a massive privilege and a huge benefit to the girls who are lucky enough to be selected, we do not take the granting of scholarships lightly. We will only select the girls who we feel will not only benefit but take full advantage of this opportunity during the year ahead.



This year the girls who have been selected are:


Emily Aird (Strathmore)
Megan Aird (Strathmore)
Carly Booth (Comrie)
Nicola Robertson (Dunblane)


Emily Aird at the age of only 12 has reduced her handicap from 21 to 13 in a period of only 12 months. She has participated in most of the SLGA Junior Events and has had some very encouraging successes. Emily is extremely enthusiastic and a great team player.


Megan Aird at the age of 15 has a playing handicap of 10 and along with Emily has entered most of the SLGA Events. Megan is a great supporter of county Events and has played in the Ladies Events as well as the Juniors and I know she will take full advantage of her scholarship.


Carly Booth (16) with a handicap of +3 is our lowest handicap female in the county. Carly is now living at home and attending Glenalmond School, therefore this is the perfect time for Carly to take advantage of the facilities Gleneagles has to offer and I know she is very excited about the year ahead.


Nicola Robertson at the age of 13 has reduced her handicap from 26 to 16 in the space of one year. She attends most of our junior events and she works extremely hard on her golf all year round. I know Nicola will take advantage of this award and will enjoy every minute of it!

We hope the girls this year will once again take advantage of the Perth and Kinross Ladies County Golf Associaiton Scholarship and will keep a close eye on their progress.

EMILY MISSES THE CUT

Emily is now home from Spain and we share in her disappointment at not gaining a LET Tour Card. However we are all very pleased with Emily's performance and are very proud to have someone of Emily's standard part of the P&K Squad. Emily is a great inspiration to all the girls and the juniors. Emily along with Laura Walker have very kindly been attending the Junior Elite Coaching to offer advice and encouragement and we thank them both very much for their commitment to the County.

On behalf of P&K I would also like to pass on our congratulations to Fife's Krystal Caithness who finished the event in a fantastic 7th position at 3 under par also to Pamela Feggans who finished in 24th place at +3 for the tournament and to Aberdeen shires Michele Thomson who completed the tournament in 34th place just one shot off obtaining her full tour card. Michelle will however be granted entry to some LET tournaments.

SCORE FROM SPAIN

Emily has scored 11 over par today in La Manga. She is extremely disappointed but we here at P&K are very proud of our Emily and hope she does well in the next two rounds as all is not lost.

NEWS FROM LA MANGA

As you will be aware it was extremely difficult to piece together the results from yesterdays first round from La Manga as the LET website was down and we just couldn't get the results anywhere! However with the help of Laura Walker we did manage to bring you the scores for the Scottish players. To see the results scroll down to the next post. I did get one score wrong which has now been corrected.

My thanks go to Laura for the information and I hope get today's scores asap! Well done to Emily in what seemed to be terrible conditions.

EMILY RETURNS A 78

Emily Ogilvy has returned a very credible 78 in the first round of the Ladies European Tour Pre-Qualifying School. Emily along with all but two Scottish players played over the South Course, the two remaining Scottish players (Krystal Caithness and Jocelyn Carthew) were on the North Course. Kylie Walker also returned 78 and Krystal Caithness and Michelle Thomson took one extra shot returning 79. Vikki Laing and Pamela Feggan returned the lowest Scottish scores with a 75. The lowest score on the North today was 69 and the lowest on the south was 71.

Emily is placed roughly in the middle of the field which is excellent at the stage. We wish her well tomorrow.

GOOD LUCK EMILY

Team member Emily Ogilvy will take part in the Ladies European Tour Pre-Qualifying School. The pre-qualifying round takes place over the North and South courses at La Manga Club in Los Belones, Murcia, Spain, from tomorrow. Emily will be one of 107 players representing 32 different countries will contest Stage I, Pre-Qualifying, over four rounds from Wednesday to Saturday, January 7 to 10.

The leading 60 players and ties from Stage one will join 30 others who are already exempt to make a field of 90 players and ties at Stage 2 Final Qualifying, which will be played on the South course from Monday to Thursday, January 12 to 15.

The Final Qualifying School, also over 72 holes, will be contested over the South course from Monday to Thursday the next week players are hoping to earn one of the 30 cards available to compete on the LET throughout the 2009 season.

Emily has been a fantastic representative of P&K golf and we wish her the very best of luck.

Perth and Kinross Team member Curtis will be one of only only two British and Irish entrants for the Arizona Silver Belle junior women's golf tournament next week.

The Arizona Silver Belle Tournament will be played from December 28 to 30 over the Arizona State University's Karsten course at Tempe. It will be over three stroke-play rounds and is open to female amateur competitors from ages 13 to 23 years. All Golfers must walk and carry their own bags which is no great problem to Carly but in America, where very few golfers actually walk between shots, such an instruction might not go down well!
